In 1904, the Astor Place Subway station opened its doors for the first time. The station's namesake, ASTOR, emblazoned in bold, striking black lettering, adorned the pristine white subway tiles.

The original ASTOR signage gradually faded from prominence, eclipsed by the widespread adoption of the Helvetica signs in 1989 – a typeface that became ubiquitous with the New York subway system.

Enamored by the nostalgia evoked by the original design, I embarked on an design project, using the five iconic letters as the cornerstone for the creation of a new typeface — The Astor Place font.
