The original 1904 ASTOR subway sign has been eclipsed by the widespread adoption of Helvetica signage throughout the New York City subway system.

So I created a typeface inspired by this nearly forgotten artifact. Working from a reference of just five letters, I designed an entire alphabet—transforming a fragment of the past into a new typographic system: the Astor Place Font.
